Course
Grow Community
Ended Aug 31, 2022
Full course description
This Summer service-learning project is completed in three steps:
1.) Planting Event [attendance and post-survey]
2.) Harvesting and Food Donation Event [attendance and post-survey]
3.) Project Reflection and/or Eco-Festival Demonstration [group discussion and/or presentation]
Attend events and complete as many assignments as you can to acquire all of the learning outcomes:
- Apply traditional ecological knowledge through sustainable gardening practices, such as planting companion plants (three sisters), heirloom seeds, and pollinator plants). These practices teach us about our relationship with Maamaa-aki (Mother Earth), family, and community. Show bravery and honesty by becoming familiar with your self through these relationships.
- Demonstrate self-sufficiency through your ability to grow, harvest, and prepare foods and medicine plants. Become aware of your role and impact on your family and community by sharing what you harvest with others. Show humility and truth by understanding your dynamic role in the community.
- Honor the Earth through ceremony and practice by offering prayer, tobacco, and song to the Creator before planting in the garden. Show love and respect to Maamaa-aki (Mother Earth) and all her relatives.
- Articulate a deeper understanding of Ojibwemowin words and phrases. Show wisdom in understanding the Medicine Wheel and Seven Grandfather Teachings.
